Free Soundproofing Calculators & Tools
Free online tools to plan and size your BlastBlock soundproofing project accurately. Calculate the STC improvement you can expect from adding BlastBlock MLV to your existing wall or ceiling assembly, and calculate exactly how much material you need based on your room dimensions.
Planning a soundproofing project correctly from the start saves significant time and money. Ordering too little material causes project delays; ordering too much wastes budget. Understanding the STC improvement you will realistically achieve helps set expectations and select the right product for your noise reduction goal. These tools are designed to give you accurate estimates in minutes, without requiring an acoustic engineering background.
STC Improvement Calculator
The STC Improvement Calculator estimates the Sound Transmission Class rating improvement when adding BlastBlock MLV to your existing wall, ceiling, or floor assembly. Enter your current assembly type and the BlastBlock product you are considering to receive an estimated total assembly STC rating.
Understanding STC benchmarks: STC 25 — loud speech clearly audible; STC 33 — typical interior drywall partition; STC 40 — loud speech heard but not understood; STC 50 — very loud sounds faintly audible; STC 60+ — professional recording studio standard. Adding BB830 to a standard drywall partition typically improves STC from 33 to 45–50. BB830LF in a double-leaf assembly reaches STC 60–70.
This is a planning estimation tool. Actual installed performance depends on installation quality, perimeter sealing, flanking paths through the structure, and the presence of other weak points such as doors, windows, and penetrations. Our acoustic team can provide project-specific guidance if your situation requires more detailed analysis.
Material Area Calculator
The Material Area Calculator determines exactly how many square meters of BlastBlock MLV you need. Enter the dimensions of each surface — walls, ceiling, floor — and the calculator provides the total coverage area plus a recommended order quantity that includes a 10% overage allowance for seam overlaps, cuts, and waste.
BlastBlock BB830 is supplied in rolls of 1000mm × 5000mm (5 m² per roll). BB830LF and BB460 are available in standard roll formats. Seam overlaps should be a minimum of 50mm (2 inches), meaning approximately 5–10% extra material is needed beyond the bare surface area. The calculator accounts for this automatically in its recommended quantity output.
How to Use These Calculators Effectively
- Measure all surfaces you plan to treat, including the full height of walls from floor to ceiling
- Subtract window and door areas from wall measurements — MLV is not installed over openings
- Add 10% to the calculated area for seam overlaps and waste from cuts
- For acoustic sealant (BA890), estimate one cartridge per 5–8 linear meters of perimeter sealing
- For putty pads (BA650), count one pad per electrical outlet or switch box
