How MLV works as an acoustic barrier, where it outperforms adding another layer of board, and where it is the wrong product entirely.
Sound transmission through a partition is governed largely by mass. Double the mass of a single-leaf partition and you gain roughly 5 to 6 dB of transmission loss. That is the mass law, and it is why heavy walls are quiet walls.
The practical problem is that mass takes space. In a hotel refurbishment or a condominium fit-out you rarely have 100 mm to give away. Mass loaded vinyl solves the space problem by delivering a high surface density in a membrane a few millimetres thick.
MLV is most valuable where the build-up depth is fixed and the acoustic target is not being met: existing partitions being upgraded, floor build-ups under a finished level, ductwork and pipe lagging, and machine enclosures.
It is also the pragmatic answer in refurbishment, where demolishing and rebuilding a partition is not an option but the guest complaints are real.
MLV is a barrier, not an absorber. If the complaint is reverberation inside a room — a restaurant that is too loud, a meeting room with a harsh ring — MLV will do nothing. That problem needs porous absorption, and specifying a barrier there wastes the client's money.
MLV also cannot fix flanking. If sound is travelling around the partition through a continuous ceiling void, a shared floor slab, or a poorly sealed service penetration, adding mass to the wall leaf changes very little. Find the flanking path first.
A barrier is only as good as its seal. Overlap and seal all joints, seal the perimeter, and treat every penetration — a single unsealed socket box can undo a layer's worth of performance. Putty pads and acoustic sealant are not optional extras on a barrier installation.
Decoupling matters too. MLV fixed rigidly to both leaves of a partition creates a bridge; where the design intent is a decoupled build-up, keep it decoupled.
